A review by Betty Owusuwaa. Kumi
Out of the 22 stories of the larabanga anthology, SUNDAY! seems to be a favorite.
Ursula M. Abanga in her own style and creativity displays a typical African culture and behavior in her write-up. The settings of the story was in one of the African countries, "Gabon" which I see to be very intelligent of her to choose that.
The love for Sunday's expressed by the character or narrator is something that goes on in most African homes. "Many people love Sunday's for the reason that after church service, they get to rest throughout the day. It's a day free of any form of stress".
In a couple of short paragraphs, after introducing Mbakpeem, the writer gives a vivid explanation why Mbakpeem thinks Christianity is a form of slavery from the we white man as to why he despised FR Peter the missionary. "I don't trust the white man and I most certainly don't trust his God". This explains a lot as to how Africans serve “God" in their own way but has decided to follow the white man's way of worship. We adopt that of the white man's culture and throw away our beautiful culture.
Ursula used a lot of metaphors in describing the characters but they were easy to understand them and I applaud her for that.
SUNDAY is a story worth reading and recommend it to everyone to read such stories which depict the African home on Sunday's where each and everyone has a role to play in the Kitchen and the family eats together.
This is a good piece by Ursula Abanga.!

I don't trust the white man and his God " .This talks about slavery and the wounds the white people left on the African
ReplyDeleteChristianity is not about a white man. It is a religion that stands but it was introduced to us by a literate. Tho the slavery was inclusive in the beginning but the religion didn’t count has to the slavery
ReplyDeleteGood, even though I do not agree with Mbakpeem that Christianity is a form of slavery.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mbakpeem saying he does not believe in the white man and his god. Religion is not forced on anyone so u find what you associate with and worship.
ReplyDeleteYeah. The use of literary devices in the story makes it more readable to make you wanting to know the ending of it. Example, Where he compared Mbakpeem's skin to that of a papier mache that has been left to dry in the sun.
ReplyDeleteThe use of suspense makes it more interesting
ReplyDeleteChristianity is by choice and not form of slavery
