Afua boni, the New York City-based Ghanaian-German model/singer/actress, has told journalism students that criticism makes a person better. She said this during a press conference for Level 400 students at AUCC last Monday February 22.
Born Judith Afua Serwaa
Owusu–Afriyie, Boni, the CEO and founder of G.D.M.A., the international
modeling agency, said she's dealt with her fair share of racism.
She says
being a strong African woman has helped her to stand amidst the emotional and
physical criticisms she has received.
“You either
learn or get better with critics” she added.
Afua Boni
said modeling is not as easy as it seems. She recalled an incident when there
was a problem with her attire for the runway: the shoes she was given to match
her dress was too tight. She said she went along and endured the pain.
Growing up,
Boni was a shy child who wanted to be a singer but everything switched after a
chance meeting at 14 with celebrity photographer Martina Schilling in Germany.
Martina loved her goofiness and took her to the studio. She became cover girl
for various magazines and today has graced the runways of the world’s fashion
capitals.
